This recipe is from my mom. It’s also the base for her chili recipe. I’m not sure where she originally got it, but it’s the best! These sloppy joes really live up to their name, so I suggest eating them open-face style with a fork and knife.

I served this with corn on the cob and some seedless watermelon slices.

Sloppy Joes

Sloppy Joes

½ cup onion, chopped
1 tablespoon butter
2 pounds hamburger
⅔ cup ketchup
½ cup water
¼ cup celery, chopped
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 ½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 ½ teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon cider vinegar
¼ teaspoon dried mustard

Sauté onion in butter. Add hamburger and brown. Drain fat and add rest of ingredients.
Simmer 30 minutes, covered.
